Keshav Rau, son of the late
S. Krishna Rau has provided some interesting and not readily available information on Pothan Joseph.
The latter had worked under Pothan Joseph
as an Assistant Editor, when the first edition of the "Deccan Herald" hit the streets of Bangalore. He later moved to "The Pioneer"
of Lucknow as its News Editor and then to "The Searchlight" of Patna - now published as the "Hindustan Times" - as its editor.
Keshav Rau and other members of the family have generously provided images of what his father wrote about
Pothan Joseph in "Vidura"
and also images of what the renowned journalist Khasa Subba Rau wrote about Pothan Joseph
in a small booklet "Men in the Limelight", a
107-page book written more than 80 years ago. The book profiles eminent persons like S. Radhakrishnan, V.V. Giri, Rajaji,
K. Srinivasan, Sathyamurthi, Pothan Joseph, etc.
A contemporary of Subba Rau, Pothan Joseph was in later years to be one of his
successors as Editor of the weekly Swarajya, an organ of the short-lived Rajaji's Swatantra Party.
Additionally, Keshav Rau also provided a scan of the first editorial published in the Deccan Herald upon its inauguration on June 17, 1948
under Pothan Joseph's editorship. Joseph also well known in India - and even in the UK - for a column he wrote called "Over a Cup of Tea"
which provided incisive analysis and observations of current events. Rau has provided the very first column of "Over a Cup of Tea" written
by Joseph and also published as part of the inaugural issue of Deccan Herald.
