PM Joseph Honored

. . . . . . .

Dr. PM Joseph, a younger brother of Barrister George Joseph and Pothan Joseph and the uncle of Sarah Joseph was recently honored at the University of the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education in Gwalior, that he founded, and where he had served as its head for many years. A brand new library was named in his honor. Mrs Laji Joseph (Mollykochamma to many of us) - PM Joseph's daughter-in-law, was there to represent the family on this occasion.

Mollykochamma provided this detailed and interesting account of the occasion:

It was a distinct honour and privilege for me to have represented the family of Dr.P.M.Joseph/Valliappa/Watchayan/Watchappachen on such an august occasion. From the moment I reached Gwalior on 3rd. evening, till I got back on the train on 5th. morning, I was treated as a VIP! Two youngsters were assigned to me, with a car and driver and they were with me throughout my stay.

The 6th. Convocation of the Deemed University of the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior took place on the 4th. of October. A minute to minute programme was drawn up for the big day. Included in the programme was the inauguration of Central Library Building by the President of India. This enormous, brand new, modern structure has "PADMASHREE DR.P.M.JOSEPH LIBRARY BLOCK" written right across the top and there is an enormous bust placed in the front of the building on a big pedestal of granite.

Unfortunately, the President called in sick the night before the function so we had the Governor of Madhya Pradesh Mr. Balaram Jhakar and the Union Minister of Sports, Mr. M.S. Gill, as the Chief guests. While welcoming and introducing the Chief Guests, the Vice-Chancellor included my name as well. I sat in the front row, on an upholstered chair, next to his wife. The Convocation was a colourful affair. B.P.Ed., M.P.Ed., M.Phil. and Doctorate degrees were awarded. The minister in his speech made references to increased budget plans so we could expect more medals in the next Olympics!!!!!! Then the crowd moved to the building where flowers were placed at the bust before the stone was unveiled. The Minister and I had shawls placed around our shoulders and we were given a coconut each, covered with silver foil. The TV and media folk were milling around. The building is spacious and one of its kind. This was followed by lunch.

It was a pleasure to meet Prof.A.Y.Sathaye and Prof.C.V.Rao who belonged to the very first batch of students. Then there was Col. Bharadwaj(4th.batch) and Prof. Gupta and others. The younger generations spoke about Appa with such awe and admiration. He truly is a LEGEND there.

The Cultural Show began at 7:30 p.m.The Vice Chancellor is an ex army man and a stickler for timing. As the Chief Guest of the evening, I was invited to light the lamp. The programme itself was very well rehearsed. There was music and a yoga demonstration, mime and colourful dances. And then I was called upon to speak. After congratulating them on Convocation...programme...etc. I said something along these lines:

. . . . . . .

..."Today you honour a man whose passion for promoting Physical Education was phenomenal, a man whose dedication to the task of building this institution was total. Dr.P.M.Joseph had an incredible, unwavering faith in the inherent potential of young people. His astute assessment of character and timely intervention set many a life on the right track. Academics, activities, administration - he excelled in all fields and was a source of inspiration to many.

On behalf of Mrs. P.M.Joseph and the rest of the family, I want you to know we are deeply honoured and touched by this gesture of appreciation - your naming this magnificent building after Dr.P.M.Joseph. May the College continue to serve the nation and grow from strength to strength....."

Then there was a formal dinner for visitors, staff and students - yet another opportunity to meet friends of the institution. Next morning a number of people came to the railway station to see me off to Delhi - I must confess I thoroughly enjoyed basking in Appa's glory! . . . . . . .
